Members:   Don’t forget to RSVP for the Linn County Bar Association’s “May LCBA Meeting” on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 950 Rockford Road SW, Cedar Rapids, for a 12:05 p.m. game between our local Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Beloit Snappers.  LCBA members will be watching the game from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Pavilion, which is the wooden deck on the left field side.

Members should have already received an RSVP request.  This event is free for dues-paid members who timely RSVP’ed.

The LCBA Board of Governors will be at the ballpark starting at 11:30 a.m. to hand out game tickets. You may bring guests, but please note guest tickets are $10.00 each.  You may pay for any guest tickets when you check in to pick up your own ticket.

 

Plan on attending for good food, good conversation, and GREAT BASEBALL with the Cedar Rapids Kernels!

LCBA Nominating Commission Results

The Nominating Committee of the Linn County Bar Association has selected the following slate of nominees to be placed on the ballot for election at the LCBA’s Annual Meeting to be held June 12:

President-Elect:  
Mark J. Parmenter, Lederer Weston Craig, PLC (to be President 2015-2016 term)

Treasurer:
Susan Pence, Bankers Trust (term expiring June 2016)

Board of Governors: 
Dean Einck, Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, P.L.C. (one year term to fill position vacated by Mark Parmenter, term expiring June 2015)
Ann McCrea, First Community Trust, N.A.     (term expiring June 2017)
Phillip D. Seidl, Seidl & Seidl, P.L.C.             (term expiring June 2017)

Current President-Elect Gregory W. Neumeyer, Bank Iowa, will become President at the Annual Meeting.

In addition to the names submitted by the Nominating Committee, any member of the LCBA may have his or her name placed upon the ballot for a position by submitting to the LCBA a petition with at least 10 LCBA members’ signatures.  Nomination petitions shall be submitted to LCBA President Steve Pace (sjp@shuttleworthlaw.com) at least four weeks prior to the meeting.  Members will vote on and elect the officers and governors for the open positions at the Annual Meeting.

Next Bar Meeting Thurs., 4/17 at CR Art Museum

The next Linn County Bar Association meeting will be held Thursday, April 17, 2014, from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art across from Greene Square Park in Cedar Rapids. The speaker will be Amy Reasner of Lynch Dallas.  Ms. Reasner is a Commissioner with the Iowa Department of Transportation and will be discussing current transportation topics.

Lunch is $8 and will be catered by Sweetie’s Chicken & Fish Fry.

6th Judicial District “Order Hour” Changes for Friday, 3/14

The Sixth Judicial District Court Administrator’s Office has advised us that due to EDMS judge training this Friday afternoon, there is a change for order hour that day.

In associate court for Linn County, “order hour” is changed to 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

In district court, “order hour”  (criminal and civil) is canceled altogether.

In the afternoon, no judges are available in any of the counties of the Sixth Judicial District (including district court judges, associate court judges and magistrates).

Next Bar Meeting Thurs., 3/20 @ C.R. Art Museum

The next Linn County Bar Association meeting will be held Thursday, March 20, 2014, from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art across from Greene Square Park in Cedar Rapids. The speakers will be Iowa State Bar Association President Guy Cook and David Brown, chair of the ISBA’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Legal Education and Licensure.  They will be discussing the ISBA’s recommendation to eliminate the bar exam for Drake and Iowa law graduates, and for other graduates to adopt a Uniform Bar Exam instead of a multi-state bar exam.  The Blue Ribbon Committee’s December 2013 report can be viewed here.

The speaker will be Dr. Les H. Garner, Jr., President and CEO of Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.  Dr. Garner will be presenting a summary of the Foundation and its role in our community.

Closure of Linn County Clerk of Court Offices for EDMS training

Please see this Administrative Order issued today, February 3, from the Iowa District Court for the Sixth Judicial District.  The Order provides for the closing of specified divisions of the Linn County Clerk of Court’s Office during various Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in March and April to provide EDMS training time for the clerk’s staff.  All divisions of the clerk’s office except the juvenile court division will close from 1-4:30 p.m. on March 4, 6, 18, 20, 25, 27 and April 1, 3 and 8.   The juvenile division of the clerk’s office will be closed 1-4:30 p.m. on March 4 and 27 and April 1, 17, 22, and 24.

EDMS Going Live in Linn County in April; Town Hall Meetings Jan. 23, 30

The Electronic Document Management Project (EDMS) is scheduled to arrive in Linn County this April.   With EDMS, court-related filings for Linn County will be filed electronically.  EDMS is scheduled to go “live” in Linn County for criminal filings April 1, civil filings April 15, and juvenile filings April 29.

 “Town Hall Meetings” will be held at the Linn County Courthouse to provide an opportunity for filers to ask questions of the EDMS team.  A Town Hall Meeting for CRIMINAL filings will be held Thursday, January 23 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each.  A Town Hall Meeting for CIVIL/JUVENILE filings will be held Thursday, January 30 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each.
