All dues-paid Linn County Bar Association members are invited to attend the LCBA’s 5th Annual LAST CHANCE SEMINAR on Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 4-6 p.m. at DUBLIN CITY PUB, 415 First St. SE, Cedar Rapids.
This FREE CLE will net LCBA members two (2) state CLE hours, including 1 hour of ETHICS credit. The LCBA will be providing appetizers to help make this an enjoyable and pain-free CLE event. Non LCBA members may also attend the CLE for a $20 fee. The fee may be paid at the door.
The CLE program is as follows:
4-5p.m. NEW CIVIL PROCEDURE RULES. Greg Lederer and Hon. Sean McPartland, who sat on the Supreme Court’s Civil Justice Reform Task Force, will speak on new amendments to the Rules of Civil Procedure taking effect January 1. These include the expedited civil track and significant changes in the discovery rules for all civil cases.
5-6 p.m. ETHICS! We welcome back Karen Erger, Director of Practice Risk Management at Lockton Companies, who will deliver a presentation, “The Butler Didn’t Do It – All-Too-True Tales of Law Firm Embezzlement.” Karen will review recent law firm embezzlement cases and their aftermath, and discuss factors that can paint a target on your firm’s proverbial back, internal controls that can help prevent theft and fraud, and symptoms that may indicate that your firm is the victim of employee fraud or embezzlement.

The next Linn County Bar Association meeting will be held Thursday, November 20, 2014, from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art across from Greene Square Park in Cedar Rapids. The speaker will be Hon. Linda Reade, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. She will be speaking on “drugs minus 2″ retroactive sentence reductions for drug offenders and the impact on communities. A ½ hour of federal and state CLE credit has been approved. The state CLE activity number is 166969.
Lunch is $10. The caterer will be Emil’s Hideaway.

The LCBA Family Law Committee will be holding its next meeting October 2 at 12 p.m. at Mr. Bean’s in downtown Cedar Rapids. The speaker will be Roxann Repstein from the Linn County Clerk’s office. She will be speaking about EDMS — what attorneys are doing right, what attorneys are doing wrong and answering questions. The presentation will begin at 12:15. Legal assistants are invited.
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, July 10, 2014, for the annual Linn County Bar Association Summer Outing. There will be a bike ride, kayaking, a golf tournament at Hunters Ridge Golf Club with a shotgun start, followed by a social hour and a catered BBQ dinner afterwards. In the morning there will be a FREE 3.25 hour CLE seminar from 8-11.30, including ethics credits, at the Federal Courthouse.

The Sixth Judicial District of the Iowa District Court has announced a vacancy for District Court Judge due to the retirement of Judge Marsha Beckelman. Information on how to apply for the position can be viewed here. Applications are due by Monday, June 23, 2014 at 3 p.m.

Members: Don’t forget to RSVP for the Linn County Bar Association’s “May LCBA Meeting” on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 950 Rockford Road SW, Cedar Rapids, for a 12:05 p.m. game between our local Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Beloit Snappers. LCBA members will be watching the game from the Plumbers and Pipefitters Pavilion, which is the wooden deck on the left field side.
Members should have already received an RSVP request. This event is free for dues-paid members who timely RSVP’ed.
The LCBA Board of Governors will be at the ballpark starting at 11:30 a.m. to hand out game tickets. You may bring guests, but please note guest tickets are $10.00 each. You may pay for any guest tickets when you check in to pick up your own ticket.
