The Sixth Judicial District Court cordially invites all Linn County Bar Association members to a reception on Tuesday, December 31 in honor of the retirement of Dee Gross from the court administrator’s office after 28 years of service. An Open House will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Linn County Courthouse. Refreshments will be served.
The state CLE Activity Number for the LCBA’s Last Chance Seminar held December 12 is 122237. The CLE was approved for 2.0 Hours total, with 1.0 hour of that being ethics.
The Linn County Clerk of Court issued a notice November 26 regarding changes to the processing of Letters of Appointment, effective immediately:
- There is no longer a fee for the issuance of Letters of Appointments.
- All Letters of Appointment will be created & issued by the Clerk of Court using the Judicial Department’s form. Forms supplied by Legal Counsel will not be accepted.
- If additional Letters are needed after the issuance of the original Letters, they will be issued by the Clerk using the original date of issuance and the Letters will indicate the date the duplicates were created.
- The Clerk of Court shall not issue any certified copies of Letters of Appointment.
- Letters shall not be issued on closed estates.
The LCBA’s 4th Annual Last Chance Seminar will be held Thursday, December 12 from 4-6 p.m. at Dublin City Pub in Cedar Rapids. The CLE will feature speakers Tre Critelli on ethics (1 hour) and Dean Spina on the Affordable Health Care Act (1 hour). Light appetizers will be served, and a cash bar will be available.
All dues-paid LCBA members may attend this 2 hour CLE free of charge. Non-members may attend for a fee of $20 and may pay at the door.

The Board of Governors is seeking nominees for its Citizenship Award to be presented at the Bench/Bar event in January. Please submit your nominations for the Citizenship Award to Steve Pace at email@example.com by December 2, 2013.
Any member of the LCBA may nominate any other member of the LCBA for such award, except current members of the Board of Governors and officers of the LCBA are not eligible for this award. There are no established criteria or guidelines that will be utilized for determining the individual or individuals who will be selected for this award, but the following factors will be taken into consideration in determining the individual or individuals who will receive the award:
1. Active participation in civic organizations that provide services to others in the community, state and/or country (not necessarily just to other lawyers);
2. Active participation in activities designed to further the interests of the Iowa bar (whether at the local, regional or state level);
3. Demonstrates a strength of character and ability to motivate others to action to benefit the community, state and/or country; and
4. Supports, promotes and “goes above and beyond” to further the interest of others in the local community.

The Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court will start its 2013-14 season with a cocktail hour starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at Elmcrest Country Club, 1 Zach Johnson Dr NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402, followed at 6 p.m. by a CLE program (“What Every Litigator Needs to Know About Wills and Probate”), then a dinner at 7 p.m. Please join the Inn as our guests for this event.
The goals of the Inn are, among others: to establish a society of judges, lawyers, legal educators, law students and others, to promote excellence in legal advocacy; to foster a greater appreciation for the adversary system of dispute resolution, with an emphasis on ethics, civility, professionalism and legal skills; and to provide significant education experiences that will enhance the abilities of lawyers as counselors and advocates and of judges as adjudicators and judicial administrators.
Inn members include both State and Federal judges, law professors, in-house counsel, partners and associates from area law firms of all sizes, including solo practitioners, from all facets of practice – both civil and criminal. The Inn meets at various locations throughout the Corridor, 8 times September through May, typically in the evening of the 2nd Thursday of each month, starting at 5 p.m. for a reception, a CLE at 6, followed by dinner. The Inn provides a great way to informally network with all types of attorneys while earning CLE. Annual dues are $240 for associates (1-5 years of experience) and $340 for masters (11-20 years of experience) (there is also an emeritus status for judges and senior attorneys).
