As you know, a number of Iowa Supreme Court Justices and district court judges face retention elections this fall, including Justice David Wiggins, the target of an anti-retention campaign based on his participation in the Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling in Varnum v. Brien. The Iowa State Bar Association, Linn County Bar Association, and Linn Law Club have expressed their support for the retention of Iowa’s judges.
To facilitate discussion of Iowa’s judicial retention system, the Linn Law Club has partnered with ImpactCR, a committee of the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce, to host an event on the topic next Wednesday, October 24, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. Speakers will include Steven Pace, former Member of the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Iowa Supreme Court and Iowa Court of Appeals; Matt Dummermuth, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa; Justice David Baker, former Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court; and Patrick Baird, former President and CEO of AEGON USA, LLC. Light refreshments will be provided. Attached to this email is a flyer for the event; if you have any questions, feel free to contact Ray Rinkol, who has generously helped plan the event, at email@example.com.
This forum is open to the public, and is largely based on the desire to discuss the topic of judicial retention with the public and any who may have questions on the process or wish to learn more about it. Please plan to attend, and spread the word to family, friends, and colleagues!
The Linn Law Club has elected its officers for the 2012-2013 year as follows: Nicholas Kilburg, President; Megan Dimitt, Vice-President; Christina Jacobs, Secretary; and Chris Lueth, Treasurer. Check the Linn Law Club’s page here for more information on Linn Law Club.
