Next Bar Meeting November 20 at Art Museum

The next meeting of the Linn County Bar Association will be held Thursday, November 20, 2008, beginning at noon at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art on Third Avenue SE, across from Greene Square Park.  The meeting room is located on the third floor.  Parking is available behind the building on the Second Avenue side.  The speaker will be Michelle McMurray of the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission.  Ms. McMurray will speak on  Iowa’s Fair Housing laws.    The lunch will be catered by Kristeena’s.

As usual, if you are planning to attend, please respond to the RSVP request you receive from Attendance Chair Assistant Jeannie McCall.  If you are unable to attend, you do not need to send an e-mail.  If you are unable to attend the luncheon meeting after you have already sent an RSVP at an earlier time, please let Jeannie McCall know as soon as possible by e-mailing her or calling her at 365-9101, ext. 142, to advise that you are unable to attend.  Remember:  Your RSVP’s are very important!  Thank you so much for your assistance in helping to provide an accurate attendance count for the caterers.

Federal Court to Remain at C Street Location

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa issued the following announcement today:

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa has decided to remain in its temporary location at 4200 C Street SW, Cedar Rapids, until the court is able to move to the new Courthouse. Construction is scheduled to begin on the new Courthouse in Spring/Summer of 2009 with a currently projected completion date in 2012. The court will make modest improvements at 4200 C Street SW to insure the court’s mission can be carried out during this interim period.

The LCBA website is currently experiencing problems posting information, including district court schedules, to the website.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

UPDATE (5:30pm): We have made some changes and upgrades to the site and it appears those changes and upgrades have alleviated the site problems we were experiencing. If you notice any problems, including broken links, please let us know.

Linn Law Club Event October 1 at Daniel Arthur’s

The Linn Law Club will host a gathering on October 1st at Daniel Arthur’s.  Drinks and light appetizers will be provided in the downstairs lounge from 5-7 PM.

Daniel Arthur’s is located downtown at 821 3rd Avenue SE.

Taft Middle School seeking mock trial volunteer coaches

The Taft Middle School Mock Trial team is looking for some lawyers to help them prepare for competition.  The students meet Monday through Friday from 8 to 8:50 a.m. and 1:10 to 2 p.m. and are looking for assistance with each class once a week, and possibly more as their first competition on November 1 approaches.  If you are interested, please contact Taft Middle School Co-Volunteer Coordinator Jennifer Miller at millerjj@mchsi.com.

Linn County District Court Moving Back to Courthouse 9/29

Effective Monday, September 29, 2008 the Linn County District Court will begin doing jury trials, civil court hearings (except in small claims cases), and criminal hearings at the Linn County Courthouse on May’s Island.  Juvenile cases, adoptions, small claims cases, traffic cases and simple misdemeanor cases will be heard at the Palmer Building located at 123 5th Street S.E.  After September 26 the Kirkwood Center for Continuing Education will no longer be used as an alternative courthouse.
