Iowa federal courts remove federal CLE requirements

This summer the District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa each adopted an amended Local Rule 83 eliminating the requirement of six hours federal CLE biannually to be able to practice in federal court.   Under the amended rule, which is effective immediately, federal CLEs are NO LONGER REQUIRED.   The only requirements for continuing to practice in ND & SD Iowa are now (1) admission and good standing in the Iowa bar, and (2) payment of an annual fee. Applicants for Magistrate Position

The Sixth District Magistrate Appointing Commission issued the following press release on July 30, 2018:

The following have submitted their names as applicants by the Magistrate Appointing Commission to fill the unexpired term of Magistrate Kristofer Lyons commencing on August 3, 2018 and ending July 31, 2021.   The Commission will meet on Thursday, August 2, 2018, commencing at 1:00 p.m. in the Magistrate‘s Courtroom in the Jones County Courthouse.   At that time, the applicants will be interviewed by the Commission members.   The successful applicant will be selected by the Commission and his/her name submitted to Chief Judge Patrick Grady and Clerk of Court Roxann Repstien. Candidates Sought for North Liberty City Attorney

The City of North Liberty, Iowa (population 18,300) is seeking candidates for the position of City Attorney. North Liberty is a full service and thriving community located between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, with an operating budget of $40 million.

The City Attorney provides legal advice and services to the Mayor, City Council, City Administrator, City Staff and Boards and Commissions in matters related to operations, services and activities of the municipality; drafts City ordinances, resolutions and other legislative documentation; reviews policies and procedures for compliance with legal requirements; participates in traffic court; and, oversees condemnation proceedings.

Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate degree and admission to practice in Iowa state courts, as well as federal courts, is required. Five years‘ experience in general legal practice with exposure to municipal or government law and experience in legal practice including litigation and negotiation, real estate, commercial and contract law is preferred.

Salary range for the position is $110,000 – $130,000 with an excellent benefit package, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, vacation and other paid leave and retirement contributions. The City Attorney is a FLSA exempt position, under the supervision of the City Administrator.

Notice from Judicial Magistrate Appointing Commission

Notice is hereby given that on August 2, 2018, in the Jones County Courthouse, Anamosa, Iowa, the above Commission will meet for the purpose of selecting and appointing one part-time judicial magistrate to serve the remainder of the four-year term of Magistrate Kristopher Lyons which began on August 1, 2017, pursuant to Chapter 602, the Code, as amended.

Applications will be taken for a period of 15 days and are available at the office of the Clerk of Court, Jones County Courthouse, Jones County, Iowa.   Applications must be completed and returned no later than 3:00 p.m. on July 27, 2018, to the Jones County Clerk of Court‘s Office.   No applications will be accepted after that time.   A letter of interest and resume of qualifications should accompany the completed application.

Prior to August 2, 2018, the Commission will determine the interview procedure.   Applicants selected for an interview will be notified of their interview place and time by telephone.

Applicants must be residents of Jones County, Iowa, or a resident of a county contiguous to Jones County (Linn, Delaware, Dubuque, Jackson, Clinton or Cedar Counties), and less than 72 years of age as of August 1, 2018.   A candidate must be admitted to practice law in Iowa, unless the person is not admitted to practice law and held a magistrate position of April 1, 2009.

Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference August 15–17, 2018

The judges of the Eighth Circuit courts invite you to join them August 15 – 17, 2018, at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, Iowa, for the Judicial Conference. This is a full conference for all judges and members of the Bar.

We are very pleased that the Honorable Neil M. Gorsuch, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Honorable Jeff Sessions, Attorney General of the United States, will address the conference on Friday, August 17.
