Job Opening: Assistant Attorney, Student Legal Services at the University of Iowa

Student Legal Services, part of the Division of Student Life at the University of Iowa, is seeking an Assistant Attorney to assist the supervising attorney and director in providing legal services to University of Iowa students.  The Assistant Attorney will also guide law students in their clinical work and ensure obligations to the judicial process.  The primary focus of this position will be on immigration and tenant-landlord issues with other cases as needed.  This position will also assist with the development and presentation of outreach programming to educate University students in areas such as landlord-tenant law, criminal law, and other areas of law.

Mental Health/Disability Services of the East Central Region Request for Proposal for Legal Services

Mental Health/Disability Services of the East Central Region is offering a Request for Proposals (RFP) for legal services.  The East Central Region is a 28E-organized governmental service that provides policy, planning, services, and supports to people with disabilities in a nine-county region in Eastern Iowa.  Legal services primarily include advice and consultation on contractual considerations between the Region and MH/DS providers in the area, and occasionally consultation regarding individual client issues.  ECR welcomes your consideration and submission of a proposal no later than March 12, 2020.  Instructions are included in the RFP; however, if there are additional questions, please direct them to Mae Hingtgen, CEO of the East Central Region at or at (563) 239-0013.


The Sixth Judicial District Court is seeking a part-time judicial hospitalization referee for Johnson County with a desired starting date of October 15, 2019.  An Iowa law license is required and substantial experience with commitment proceedings is preferred.  The current monthly salary is $1,218.75 with continual funding contingent upon renewal of an annual 28E Agreement between the Iowa Judicial Branch and Johnson County.  No fringe benefits are included as a part of compensation.  The referee must be available to conduct hearings on Tuesday or Friday, or sometimes both days in the same week.

The primary duties of the hospitalization referee are:

1) to conduct commitment hearings pursuant to the relevant provisions of the Iowa Code; 

2) to determine whether commitment or release of the respondent is appropriate; 

3) to issue appropriate orders based on the evidence presented at the commitment hearing; and

4) to serve as the backup referee when the other referee has conflicts, is on vacation, or is sick.

The joint Linn and Benton County Magistrate and Associate District Court Judge Appointment Commissions will meet on Friday, November 16, 2018, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Linn County Courthouse for the purpose of nominating and certifying three individuals to the chief judge of the Sixth Judicial District to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Associate Juvenile Judge Susan Flaherty.   Within fifteen days after the chief judge receives the list of three nominees, the district judges of the Sixth Judicial District must appoint one of the three nominees as a Linn County district associate judge.
