– Last Chance Seminar 2 hr CLE on 12/10 @ Dublin City Pub

The Linn County Bar Association’s 6th Annual Last Chance Seminar will be held Thursday, December 10, 2015, from 4-6 p.m. at Dublin City Pub, 415 1st Street SE, in Cedar Rapids.  This CLE will net LCBA members 2 state CLE hours, consisting of 2 hours of ETHICS credit.

From 4 – 5 p.m.: Scammer Claus is Coming to Town:  Lawyer and ethics/risk management columnist Karen Erger (Vice President and Director of Practice Risk Management with Lockton Companies) will present some (literally) incredible email and Internet scams that have taken in unsuspecting lawyers – and that may be coming soon to a computer near you. She will review some practical steps you can take to protect yourself and your law firm from these fraudulent schemes and to comply with your ethical obligations to your clients.

From 5 – 6 p.m.: David Roth, the Grinch who stole Christmas:  Greg Lederer (Lederer Weston Craig, PLC), who represents Gallagher, Langlas & Gallagher PLC, will report on the status of the Roth/GLG matter, discuss its impact on your practice, and offer some lessons on how to protect yourself and/or your law firm.

Light appetizers will be served, and a cash bar will be available.

– Free 1 hr Criminal Law CLE 9/29 @ U of I

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights will host a panel discussion on representation for indigent defendants in Iowa at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, at the Old Capitol in Iowa City. Panelists include State Rep. Mary Wolfe (D) from Clinton, the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee; Steve Drahozal, Assistant Dubuque Public Defender and chair of the Iowa State Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section Council; Prof. Celesta Albonetti, UI Department of Sociology; and Dr. Brian Farrell, UI College of Law and President of the Innocence Project of Iowa. Event details are available here. The event precedes an October 4 talk by attorney and Just Mercy author Bryan Stevenson.

– LCBA Summer Outing: Thurs., July 16

Have you RSVP’ed yet for the LCBA Summer Outing?  Invitations for registration have been sent to all LCBA members for the Outing, which will be held Thursday, July 16.  The Outing includes a 3.25 hour CLE at the Cedar Rapids Public Library (downtown branch); a boxed lunch following the CLE; bike ride; kayak; or golf (extra charge for the latter two); and drinks and supper at Elmcrest Country Club that evening.

– Next Bar Meeting 2/19 w/ speaker Cty Atty Vander Sanden

The next Linn County Bar Association meeting will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015, from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art across from Greene Square Park in Cedar Rapids. The speaker will be Linn County Attorney Jerry Vander Sanden, who will discuss grand jury use and practice in Iowa.  The presentation has been approved for .5 hours state CLE, activity number 177451.

Lunch is $10.

– Bench-Bar Event Jan. 22

The 2015 Bench-Bar Event will be held Thursday, January 22, 2015 from 4:30-7 p.m. at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Carnegie Library (main level).

This year’s Bench-Bar Event will recognize Hon. Nancy Baumgartner and Hon. Marsha Beckelman on their retirement, honor our 50 year members and include a presentation of the 2015 LCBA Citizenship Award.  During the first half hour of the event, a free .5 hour CLE will be presented by the Iowa Insurance Division on the Affordable Care Act Individual Marketplace.  This CLE has been approved for a .5 hour credit, Activity 173109.

Toasting and tributes for our honorees will take place immediately following the CLE, with hors d’oeuvres, drinks and live music.

All dues-paid Linn County Bar Association members are invited to attend the LCBA’s 5th Annual LAST CHANCE SEMINAR on Thursday, December 11, 2014 from 4-6 p.m. at  DUBLIN CITY PUB, 415 First St. SE, Cedar Rapids.

This FREE CLE will net LCBA members two (2) state CLE hours, including 1 hour of ETHICS credit.  The LCBA will be providing appetizers to help make this an enjoyable and pain-free CLE event.   Non LCBA members may also attend the CLE for a $20 fee.  The fee may be paid at the door.

The CLE program is as follows:

4-5p.m. NEW CIVIL PROCEDURE RULES.  Greg Lederer and Hon. Sean McPartland, who sat on the Supreme Court’s Civil Justice Reform Task Force, will speak on new amendments to the Rules of Civil Procedure taking effect January 1.  These include the expedited civil track and significant changes in the discovery rules for all civil cases.

5-6 p.m.  ETHICS!  We welcome back Karen Erger, Director of Practice Risk Management at Lockton Companies, who will deliver a presentation,The Butler Didn’t Do It – All-Too-True Tales of Law Firm Embezzlement.”  Karen will review recent law firm embezzlement cases and their aftermath, and discuss factors that can paint a target on your firm’s proverbial back, internal controls that can help prevent theft and fraud, and symptoms that may indicate that your firm is the victim of employee fraud or embezzlement.
