Since 1958, the U.S. has celebrated Law Day as a national dedication to the principles of government under law. In 1961, Congress designated May 1 as the official Law Day to celebrate and spread the message of the rule of law and its critical role in society.
Local bar associations in the Sixth Judicial District have long participated in Law Day, and this year we again join bar associations nationwide in the National Law Day of Action for attorneys to reaffirm the oath we each took upon admission to the bar—a shared commitment to uphold due process, defend constitutional rights, and maintain the independence of the judiciary and the legal profession. By retaking the oath, we stand together as visible stewards of those principles.
In addition, in recognition of the 250th anniversary of our country and the role lawyers have played—and continue to play—in the founding and preservation of our constitutional system, the ISBA is donating a commemorative flag to each of Iowa’s 99 counties. During each ceremony, we will present the flag to our county Board of Supervisors for display at each of our courthouses. The flag is intended to serve as a symbol of our enduring commitment to constitutional governance and the rule of law.
