Passing of former LCBA member James Powers

The Linn County Bar Association mourns the passing of longtime Cedar Rapids attorney James “Jim” M. Powers, who died on May 11, 2026, at the age of 84.

Jim received his BA and JD degrees from the University of Iowa and practiced law in Cedar Rapids for many decades. He began his legal career with the firm of Sargent, Spangler, Hines and Pence, later Hines, Pence, Day and Powers, and eventually practiced with Powers and Beard in the Averill House.

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, beginning at 12:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 310 5th Street SE, Cedar Rapids, with funeral services to follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment will immediately follow at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.
